On Friday March 30, Good Friday 2018, The Fredericton Choral Society and the Fredericton Symphony Orchestra will present Antonin Dvořák’s ‘Stabat Mater’, one of the towering monuments of choral music, at Wilmot United Church, 7:30 p.m.
Dvořák’s setting of the 13th century hymn, ‘Stabat Mater’, which imagines Mary’s suffering during Christ’s crucifixion, was composed in 1876-1877, shortly after the death of Dvořák’s young children. “Dvořák rose above his personal challenges to create a highly sensuous statement of personal faith and belief clothed in symphonic robes, which culminates in a dramatic ‘Amen’.” (Quote from Michael Riley on Gramophone website.)
